Gardens of Health and Taste. In search of the oldest pharmacy and kitchen gardens on the Escarpment
An opportunity to learn about the phenomenon of Warsaw as a garden-city, where the Vistula escarpment combined the function of a luxurious pantry and a modern laboratory. During a walk with old maps, participants will find the locations of the oldest kitchen, botanical, and apothecary gardens. They will then walk from the gardens of the Royal Castle to the vicinity of the Kazimierzowski Palace, looking for traces of Villa Regia and the first Botanical Garden of the University of Warsaw, to see how botany and gardening served medicine and culinary arts. The walk takes the form of a field confrontation of the modern fabric of the city with iconography and the oldest maps (including a series published by the Museum of Warsaw). It fulfills the mission of the Museum of Pharmacy by showing plants as the foundation of old medicine and the daily life of Warsaw’s residents.
