Central Archives of Historical Records

The Central Archives of Historical Records [AGAD] is the oldest public archive in Poland, its origins dating back to the Duchy of Warsaw. It was established by a decree of Frederick Augustus on 2 September 1808. From its inception, now over 200 years ago, the Archive has served as an institution of public trust and an archival institution, collecting and safeguarding the manuscript legacy of the authorities and offices of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Currently, the Central Archives of Historical Records holds a historic collection that is not subject to significant additions, chronologically ranging from the 12th century to World War I. The unique AGAD collection measures almost 7,000 linear meters.
