The Society was founded on 18 March 1963, but considers itself a continuation of the traditions of earlier societies. It was established by Professor Stanisław Lorentz, along with Stanisław Herbst, Antoni Słonimski, Elżbieta Barszczewska, Kazimierz Rudzki, and Julian Kulski. It is a public benefit organization, whose purpose and chief goal—according to its statute—is the welfare of Warsaw and its inhabitants.
